5 Leadership Skills I want to Improve in 2017 – by Ty Tamasaka
Partnering with the Lord and serving in ministry is both an incredible privilege and great responsibility. It brings great joys, blessings, challenges, and opportunities for growth. Below are some areas I want to grow as a leader in 2017. As a youth leader, I am striving to see a few things in 2017.
- Teens giving their lives to Jesus and getting baptized.
- Teens maturing in their faith and inviting friends to church.
- Teens serving and even sensing a call to follow God into full-time ministry.
- Teens living out stories of personal transformation.
In order to see those things happen in 2017, here are some Leadership Skills I want to improve – and hope you do too.
1 – Improve my Relationship Building Skills – Great leaders have a great skill with people. Whether it’s talking to a troubled teen, a stressed out parent, or frustrated church member, good leaders have the skills to offer encouragement, gain respect, and help others build confidence. I am an introvert by nature and so it takes intentionality on my part to make the effort to build relationships.
In 2017, do you need to grow in your relationship building skills?
2 – Improve my Servant Leadership – As leaders, we have our own ideas, strategies, and personalities. It’s important to keep the heart of a servant leader. Serving God as a church leader is an opportunity to serve not to rule. Great leaders follow their leader and have a heart to serve.
In 2017, do you need to grow in your servant leadership?
3 – Team Building and Recruiting – Discipleship involves more than improving our own capacity for ministry, but raising others to do the work of the ministry. Serving the Lord in is always about building and developing people.
In 2017, do you need to improve your team building and recruiting?
4 – Improve my Personal Drive to Reach More Lost People – It’s easy to fall into the trap of caring for and loving the people who are a part of your ministry now while losing the passion to reach lost people. Jesus had a great balance in ministry – caring for those He led while never losing sight of reaching the lost.
In 2017, do you need to increase your personal drive to reach more lost people?
5 – Organization – Organization is NOT a natural strength of mine. Some people – including my wife – border on obsessive-compulsive-disorders. I don’t. I am content with disorganization but that doesn’t always serve me well in ministry – or those I serve.
In 2017, do you need to grow your organization skills?
These are some areas I want to grow as a leader in 2017. What about you?
