6 Amazing Free Online Tools for Sermon Preparation – by Ty Tamasaka
Studying and preparing to share God’s Word is both a serious responsibility and a great joy for Bible teachers. The truth is that many times pastors and church leaders are hard pressed for two things when it comes to sermon preparation – time and resources.
Whether you are a Senior Pastor, Youth Pastor, Bible Teacher, or Sunday School Teacher, I hope these online resources will be helpful in reducing your preparation time (so you have more time to care for, love on, and shepherd God’s people) and the great thing is the cost for these resources are FREE!
Below, in no particular order, are the my top six FREE online resources I use when studying for sermon preparation.
1 – Bible Gateway
Bible Gateway offers a number of different Bible reading plans in addition to a great number of different Bible translations. It’s a great resource for personal devotions and gives a great way to look at Scripture references in different I really use this site a lot since I’ve started doing my devotions online. This site makes it easy to copy and paste Scriptures directly into Word documents.
2 – Blue Letter Bible
Blue Letter Bible is a great site for more in depth Bible studies. The free commentaries include some amazing historical church fathers like Matthew Henry and George Whitfield. The more contemporary commentaries are from the Calvary Chapel movement with pastors like Chuck Smith and David Guzik. I frequently use the free online Bible commentaries – particularly David Guzik’s Bible commentary to help supplement my devotional time.
3 – Sermon Central
Sermon Central is another great resource for sermon preparation. It’s like a pot-luck of sermons and sermon illustrations by a large number of pastors and Bible teachers from across differing denominations. It’s well organized with sermons and sermon illustrations which you can find by topic or Scripture. Because it is a site with ministers of different denominations, it is important to exercise caution when it comes to theology. This website has blessed me so much that I’ve also signed up as a contributor.
4 – The Source for YM (Youth Ministry)
While the Source 4 YM (Youth Ministry) is a great website with tons of free resources for youth ministries, I find that it has some amazing and insightful object lessons and sermon starters. Though it’s primary target is youth leaders, I find that a lot of these resources are great for use when teaching children, all the way through adults – and its free!
5 – LifeChurch.tv
This website offers free videos, graphics, sermon transcripts from Lifechurch.tv. As the creators of the YouVersion Bible App, Lifechurch.tv is very creative when it comes to presenting the Gospel. Lifechurch.tv is one of the largest churches in the United States and they choose – very generously – to give away their resources to other church leaders. Another thing that is particularly awesome about this site is that it has resources for Bible teachings for all ages from very young children to adults – and did I mention it’s all free!?!
6 – Creative Bible Study
I don’t use this site as frequently as I do the others, but it does offer what it says – creative Bible study. Has some great object lessons and resources for using in Sunday School through adult lessons.
There you have it – my top free online resources for sermon preparation. Are there others you recommend or use? I’d love to hear about it.
